Simple and compound interest
The same rate, with and without interest on the interest.
Result
You will see simple interest and compound interest for the same rate.
How this works
Simple interest adds the same slice every year: starting amount times rate times years. It does not earn interest on the interest.
Compound interest does. The rate is split by how often it compounds, and that smaller rate is applied that many times a year. Monthly compounding on a 5% rate is not the same number as 5% once a year. Neither result is a savings-account quote. Banks publish their own APY, and this page does not subtract taxes or fees.
An example
$2,000 at 5% for 8 years. Simple interest ends at $2,800, which is $800 earned. Compounded monthly, the same rate ends near $2,981, because earlier interest starts earning too.
