Seed spacing and plant population
Plants per acre from row spacing, plus seed to order.
Result
Enter row spacing, in-row spacing, and the size of the field or bed.
How this works
Each plant is given a rectangle: row spacing times in-row spacing. An acre is 43,560 square feet, so plants per acre is 43,560 divided by that rectangle in square feet. The field’s plant count uses your acreage, or your square feet if you are planting a garden bed.
Seed to order is the plant count divided by germination and by the share you expect to keep, rounded up. A 30-inch row and a 6-inch spacing is 34,848 plants per acre before those losses.
An example
30 inches between rows, 6 inches in the row, 10 acres, 95% germination, 90% kept. That is 34,848 plants per acre, 348,480 plants in the field, and 407,579 seeds to order.
