Body fat estimate
The Navy circumference method. A tape, not a lab.
Result
Enter the tape measurements in inches. Hips are required for the female formula.
How this works
The U.S. Navy circumference method estimates body fat from a tape. For men it uses height, neck, and waist. For women it also uses hips. The formulas use base-10 logs of those differences. The category names — essential, athletic, fitness, average, higher — follow common fitness charts. They are not a medical classification.
A number under the usual essential range usually means the tape was read in a way the formula did not expect. Recheck before you believe it.
An example
Male formula, 70 inches tall, 15-inch neck, 34-inch waist. The estimate is about 11%, in the athletic band on those charts. A larger waist with the same height and neck produces a higher percent.
